1955 Louisiana Acadian Bicentennial Celebration Kaiser Aluminum Token

1955 Louisiana Acadian Bicentennial Celebration Kaiser Aluminum Token

In 1955, Louisiana's Cajun community held the largest Cajun pride celebration to date: the Acadian Bicentennial Celebration (ABC). The event, which ran for an entire year, observed the 200th anniversary of Le Grand Dérangement, which saw more than 11,000 descendants of French colonists (called Acadians) forcibly expelled from the now-British Canadian Maritimes. Now considered a horrific act of ethnic cleansing, nearly half of those deported in 1755 died of drowning, exposure, or disease. Eventually, many Acadians made their way to Louisiana, whose large French and Spanish populations made the area friendly to Catholics. There, they became the foundational backbone of Louisiana's Cajun community.

This token, minted during the 1955 Acadian Bicentennial Celebration, was produced by Kaiser Aluminum.
